My Blog Is Having A Makeover

Making money on the internetWhen I originally started this blog I had always meant to change the design at some stage – sooner rather than later, but I ‘m afraid it’s much later!

My coach at the time said not to deliberate too long over choosing a theme but just get something started. So that is what I did.

I always intended to choose something else and get a more personalized header graphic designed but somehow I just never got around to it. You know how it is. Now, as I go through Marc Milburn’s coaching course, I decided that I really must make the effort to upgrade it, to give it a bit more personality.

Marc recommended a couple of sites that he liked for paid themes as they are usually better designs than free ones but when I looked through them there weren’t any that jumped out at me. You can get them changed considerably but I didn’t really know what I wanted.

I spent a long time last week searching for WordPress Blog themes both free and paid for ones. I went to a lot of other blogs to see if I could find a theme I liked and eventually came up with the Flexx Themes from iThemes.

After watching the video demo on the site I decided that it was a great theme with a lot of flexibility to make it unique to me. There is a choice of many layout possibilities but Marc recommended a two column theme. Many two column themes are fairly narrow but with the Flexx Professional I can have a wider layout if I want which I prefer.

I decided to go for it and discovered during the buying process that I could get a discount with a coupon code so I searched for a current code and as luck would have it I found one. Once you buy one of their themes you become a member and there is a forum for questions and help with the theme.

Straight away I needed to know how to change the colours because I decided to go for a completely new colour.

I got a new header designed by Sem whom I found on the Warrior forum. He previously designed a great new header for my detox blog when I changed that theme for Heat Map Pro theme that has improved my adsense earnings.

I had always wondered if I should make more of the fact that I am a silver surfer! I don’t like to draw attention to my age but on the other hand there are a lot of people my age and older on the internet. That is one place where age is no barrier. I hope to be an inspiration to others who want to start to make money online to help fund their retirement.

Once I got started asking questions on the forum about changing the colors on my new theme I was told I should install the Flexx Professional Child theme to preserve the original theme files. Ah here we go!

I have installed the child theme but don’t understand the instructions that came with it. Why can’t they make these things easy? It is probably easy once you  have mastered these things but anything that looks the slightest bit technical really puts me off.

Changing the colors is not as easy as I thought it would be. Changing the date background requires editing an image. Well, that’s me out!

I’ve given up on trying to do that in spite of my good intentions so I have just posted the job on oDesk where I have found some great people to help me before. For someone familiar with WordPress and CSS it will be a breeze.

So if you arrive at this blog to find the colours don’t match then you have caught me in the middle of my makeover. Come back soon to see the final result.

  1. Wow your new header looks more beautiful than the former one. In the process of describing how your blog make-over went, you have provided a blueprint for people who want to design their blogs. I am quite sure I will be following in your steps whenever I want to redesign my blog.

    1. Hi, Tom, Yes, the header is certainly an improvement on the previous one. It’s all taking rather longer than I thought but I’ll get there in the end!
