How To Get Your Download Page Banners To Open In A New Window

I was testing out my squeeze page funnel to make sure it all worked OK before I book a solo ad and I noticed that one of the affiliate banners I have on my download page for my Free Traffic Deluge report did not open in a new window.

Have you ever lost the page you were on after you click a banner that doesn’t open in a new window? I have many a time and it’s soooooooooooo annoying.

If you don’t notice that you have left the site you were on or forget to press the back button when you close the page you lose the page you were on where there were maybe other things you wanted to look at.

Then, you have to hunt for an email that contains the link to get back to the page. Sometimes you can’t find it or it has not arrived yet and by the time it has you’ve forgotten all about it anyway.

I don’t want that to happen to visitors who get to my download page. I want them to stay on the page and click on the other affiliate banners I have on it.

The solution is simple. All I had to do was to add this small piece of code to the banner code at the end of the target URL within the href tag:  target=”_blank”

Some of the product banners already have this piece of code inserted but others don’t so you have to check them to make sure.

Here is an example of a banner code that will not open in a new window.

<a href=”http://yourtargetURL”  ><img alt=” ” src=”http://ImageURL” border=”0″ height=”250″ width=”250″ /></a>

Here is the same one with the code inserted:

<a href=”http://YourTargetURL” target=”_blank“><img alt=”” src=”http://YourImageURL” border=”0″  height=”250″ width=”250″ /></a>

So, make sure you check all your affiliate banners on your confirm, thank you and download pages so you don’t lose your visitors to another site.

  1. Great tip Sandy!!

Whenever I lose a page I’m on for clicking a banner link that takes me directly to another page, I always go to my browser’s history and just pull the page back again from there.

For doing this, there are a number of keyboard shortcuts but every browser is different, so just look what the shortcut is for your browser and use that whenever that happens to you again.

Hope this helps and great tip on making your links open a new window for not losing your traffic!

  2. Hi Sandy,
It is really annoying when you find a page that really interests you, you can’t find it again. Like Sergio, I try to use my history, but I usually discover that I have just cleaned all my browsing details. Sometimes I am able to backtrack, but usually I have to hope I will drop on it again by accident.

Thanks for the ‘about blank’ tip as well. I always forget that when creating links. I should create a notepad entry, print it off, and staple it to my forehead. Then I will always know where it is. 🙂

    1. Ha, ha, good one Barry! I have a lot of links saved in notepad. I just have to remember where I saved them!

  3. Usually these days don’t people find it annoying when links open in new pages? I personally do, and if I ever decide I want something to open in a new window, I right click it. Anyway, its a nice bit of code you’ve provided there which I’m sure people will find it interesting.

    1. Hi Candice

I find it annoying when links don’t open in a new window! People new to the internet do not always know that you can right click to open a link in a new window. I didn’t discover that for some time. I used to lose pages all the time when I clicked on a link on a download page and got taken away from the site.

I think it pays to play safe and make sure your banners include the code that opens the link in a new window.
      Thanks for your comment.
